Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by The Broke, and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Join us every Tuesday to see MBJ’s Top Ten Listicles!

It was really fun coming up with our favourite places to read for today’s Top Ten Tuesday. Most of our Top Ten’s are actual places, but we have a bonus that isn’t a place and more a position.

Carmen’s Favourite Places to Read

I’m subdividing my favourite places to read into two categories: outside and inside.

Favourite Places to Read Outside

By a Pool

Reading by water is incredibly soothing to me; a pool on a hot summer day is a perfect relaxing setting to enjoy a good book. I take a dip in the pool, maybe float around on my inflatable penguin Peter. When I’m all cooled off, I hop out and warm back up by reading poolside.

In a Chaise Lounge Chair

I love chaise lounge chairs; they might be (IMO) the most comfortable style of chair. I love changing the angle of the back so I can lay down on my stomach to read or upright with my legs out in front of me.

This style of chair is also great on my back. I also can’t deny that chaise lounges are often found around pools and some of my favourite places to read outside on beaches.

On a Beach

Another of my favourite places to read outside is on a beach. I sit in a chair with a stack of books and some tunes and let the sun and surf take me into the books.

Favourite Places to Read Inside

A Coffee Shoppe

When I have to read for school, I love doing so in coffee shops. The hustle and bustle of other people working or reading and the smell of coffee are incredibly motivating, making it one of my favourite places to read.

By the Fireplace

There is nothing better than curling up in front of a warm fire on a cold winter day with some fuzzy socks and a book (cliché, I know). There was a fireplace right outside my room when I lived in my parent’s basement.

In the winter, I would hunker down in front of the fireplace for a reading marathon. There is also a fireplace in my parent’s current house, and it is a great place to read, though I don’t get to enjoy it often since I’ve moved out.

In the Library

Libraries are the home of books, and surrounding myself with books always brings on the reading mojo.

In My Blue Chair

Other than a chaise lounge, this is my favourite chair to read in, and it has been since I was a kid. It used to be in my grandparent’s living room, and I have many memories of reading and playing in it.

When they passed away, we had to sell their house. The Blue chair was the one piece of furniture of theirs that I kept for myself. It’s moved with me to each apartment, and even though it may not be the “best” chair, I love it, and it’s one of my favourite places to read.

Sash’s Favourite Places to Read

Carmen has already mentioned a few of her favourite places to read, one of which overlap with mine: reading in a library.

I have lived in quite a few states and different cities in America and Canada, and for each city, I always made sure to get a library card. Libraries were my safe spaces, so reading in libraries will always be a go-to for me; if only I could bring a blanket now, cus they are cold!

My Rocking Chair

For my birthday, my partner bought me a yellow rocking chair. It is one of my favourite places to read in my studio apartment. To me, the colour yellow symbolizes happiness, and rocking soothes me when I’m anxious, so it, with my 7lb weighted blanket, has become my ideal reading spot.

In Any Moving Vehicle

I know some people can’t read in moving vehicles because of motion sickness, but I only seem to be affected by motion sickness if I take a bath.

So, I can’t read in the bathtub because the lapping of the water gives me motion sickness. But, I can read in moving vehicles of all types: trains, subways, cars, and planes. It’s like my rocking chair; the movement soothes me.

Reading in Bookstores

Quite a few years ago in Toronto, I found myself inside the Indigo bookstore of the Eaton center. I’m not sure what happened, but quite a few hours passed before I realized that I had gotten lost in a good book. I bought the book, can’t remember the title, and my first and last Kobo e-reader.

BONUS!

Curled Up in a Ball Covered with my Weighted Blanket

Curled up in a ball covered with my weighted blanket is not a place, but as a position, it’s pretty great. I love reading in this position while sitting in my rocking chair, on a couch, and on my bed.

We love these Top Ten Listicles, and we particularly enjoyed coming up with our list of favourite places to read. If you missed it, check out last week’s Top Ten Tuesday

I live in Toronto and I visit that Indigo bookstore. It’s such a huge one. 🙂
