2021 Hopes and New Year Resolutions

Reading Time: 2 minutes Because we at MBJ do not participate in the making of and we seem to have issues abiding by New Year resolutions. So, this year, we will be creating a list of our hopes for 2021. I, Sash, hope to go on exchange to Korea this year. It will be a year-long exchange that was to happen in August 2020, but we all know how 2020 turned out so, here’s to 2021! Not only do I want to visit Korea this new year, but I also want to read and review more books. Even though I am an English major, there is not a lot of time for reading for pleasure, and they’re just isn’t time to read and review books. Both Carmen and I have had incidents with our mental health last year, so this year we hope to take better care of ourselves this year, starting with the use of our Passion Planners. Even though we’ve both sworn off making resolutions for this year, I did hope to close each circle on my apple watch activity ring. You know, burn enough calories to complete your move goal (mine is set at 200). Stand for one minute every 12

Books with Long Titles

Reading Time: 4 minutes Finding books with long titles was pretty hard. So, we decided to mix-and-match books that we have read and books that we have not read. Generally, we tend to steer toward books with shorter titles but we were pleasantly surprised to see that we have quite a few books with long titles.

Book Covers with Fall Vibes

Reading Time: 3 minutes Ah Fall, as I said in my Fall TBR post I love it. And this week’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday is all about fall. I’ve chosen the book covers that radiate those Fall vibes. For me, Fall is synonymous with all things mysterious and magical but not scary. I am a total wimp, I like the fluffy, Disney if you will side of Fall and Halloween. Some of the books I’ve chosen I have read but some I chose just because the cover gave me those Fall vibes, here we go. Empire of Wild by Cherie Dimaline This cover gives me Fall Vibes largely because of the forest on this edition. It’s hard to tell because it’s a black and white photo but the number of leaves on the tree struck me as very autumnal. Also, this may be odd but the green chair on this cover makes me think of reading in the fall. Additionally, the content of the book gives me fall vibes because of its fantastical nature. Though this is an indigenous narrative there is an element of shapeshifting or a kind of werewolf. The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert What do you know about another

After some deliberation, we decided to talk about the covers of books that both do and don’t suit the content of the books.

Reading Time: 3 minutes Most of these books have been abandoned not because I didn’t like them but because I didn’t have time to read them or I wasn’t in the mood to read that particular genre. It is my intention to pick them up again and they still have a place on my TBR.

Top 5 Books On My Winter TBR

Reading Time: 2 minutes Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.  Every week I will share a list based on the topic provided by The Broke and the Bookish. Enjoy and please feel free to join me, I’d love to hear your own lists on whatever topics are featured.   November 28: Top Five Books On My Winter TBR Okay, not going to lie I haven’t kept my self updated with new releases or even attempted to look at my TBR list. I had one for last winter though. After looking at them I realized I really need to get on it, these books hold promise.   1.  Worth Any Cost  The last book in the Gaming the System series. I enjoyed the series immensely and its so satisfying witnessing the completion of a series you enjoyed. Coming full circle with Adam and Mia after all they’ve been through is great.   2. Echoes in Death The In Death Series have got to be one of my all time favorite series. Period. I am so behind, but I like to think that I’m not behind so much as just waiting to feed my habit once I’ve amassed a good number of the books on

Top 5 Books I Want My Niece and Nephews to Read

Reading Time: < 1 minute November 14: Top Five Books I Want My Niece and Nephews to Read   1.  The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs  Something I remember reading as a kid and even making some of the puppet pigs. It would be something I would love to experience with my young nieces and nephews.  2. Something from Nothing  A blanket changes shapes over time, literally making something from the nothing left over from what it used to be. A beautiful story who’s premise resided in my heart. 3.  Paul Bunyan  Pancakes, a tall man and a big blue ox named Babe. But the take away from this…Pancakes! 4. James and the Giant Peach  A boy, a worm, a grasshopper, a centipede, a lady bug, a lightning bug, and a spider all floating around the world in a peach and landing in NY, need I say more? 5. Trumpet of the SwanI actually had my two nieces read this book. There was a lesson to be learned and it’s not just that a Swan can learn to play the trumpet. They loved it!

Top 10 Authors I’m Dying to Meet

Enjoy and please feel free to join me, I’d love to hear your own lists on whatever topics are featured.   March 28: Top Ten Authors I’m Dying To Meet Life gets in the way and I fall behind, but this topic is so exciting. Granted the only author I would ever want to meet is; 1.  Nora Roberts  I have read nearly everything Nora Roberts, I will continue to read anything Nora Roberts aka J.D. Robb. She is literally the only the author I have a remote interest in meeting. Weird, since I wouldn’t mind meeting a few of my other favorite authors. The End! Not your typical Top Ten Tuesdays I know. I first stumbled across one of her books in high school, it was not appropriate but throughout the inappropriateness there was a real story. There was character development, her stories are entrancing. She writes under the pen name J.D. Robb and her In Death series are amazing, you would think after 25 books it would get boring but

Top 5 Books I Read in One Sitting

Reading Time: 2 minutes March 21: Read In One Sitting Theme I thought this post would be the most challenging but the books you lose time reading are the ones that are easily recalled. 1.  Confessions of  a Reformed Tom Cat by Daisy Prescott I literally just finished this book a few days ago. I’m not entirely sure what about it that made me devour it so quickly. The characters were funny, relatable and witty. There was family, love, death, acceptance all rolled into one, surprisingly “light” read. 2. Paris Lights by C.J. Duggan  Claire thinks she is being proposed to when she finally visits the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Paris being a long-awaited dream, her love of the city knows no bounds, and instead she is dumped. Instead of turning tail and running, she sticks it out in Paris determined to find her love for the city. A picture of Paris was painted and I can’t wait to visit and see the places mentioned in the book, it was magical.  3.  The Fault in Our Stars by John Green I read this book in one night. Not sure when I started but I finished at 4 am and literally threw the book against the wall (picked

I tried to make them because you know there’s a how-to at the back of the book!  2. The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch The illustrations of Robert Munsch’s books are great! Kind of bubbly sometimes, kind of scratchy, just simple and memorable. 3.  Paul Bunyan I Giant man with giant blue ox and giant food! The pancakes were my favorite.  4. James and the Giant Peach  A boy, a worm, a grasshopper, a centipede, a lady bug, a lightning bug, and a spider all floating around the world in in a peach and landing in NY. 5. The Adventures of Captain Underpants  Guys! This one came from my niece who informed me that Captain Underpants is a grown man and not just any grown man but a principle! WHAAATTTT???!! Enjoy and please feel free to join me, I’d love to hear your own lists on whatever topics are featured.   January 24, 2017: Top Ten Authors I’ve Read the Most Books From  Going through my Goodreads I noted that most of the books I read were well before the last couple of years when NA became a genre and even so, it’s still growing and the authors are slowly making a name for themselves so maybe in a few years my list of authors will grow. 1.  Nora Roberts  I have read nearly everything Nora Roberts has written and just as many novels with her pen name J.D. Robb (the In Death series), I will continue to read whatever she wants to come out with in the future. 2. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Alice, I love Alice. I found Phyllis Reynolds Naylor at 14 in High school and I have read each Alice book from then on. It’s the only book I can say I read as I was growing up. 3.

Top 5 Underrated/Hidden Gem Books I’ve Read, 2017 Ed

Reading Time: 2 minutes Top Five Underrated/Hidden Gem Books I’ve Read 1. Still Life with Strings by L.H. Cosway  This is underrated to me, I haven’t been around the book community for a while, kinda just doing my thing  and came across this hidden gem (haha). This was the first of L.H Cosway and was pleasantly surprised. If you like the arts and music with a great family, slow love then this is a great read. 2. Lovelines by S. Walden Guys! This book was unexpectedly amazing. I am drawn to books with mental disorders, something about how real they are, the struggle of the characters are always so relatable. This one is about a 30-something who suffers from OCD. It’s quirky, charming and just plain cute. If you want more info, check out my review here. It’s the first in a series but it was published in 2014 so I’m not sure if there will be a next one, it reads as a standalone. 3. Skinny Me by Charlene There are mixed reviews about this one and most of the reviews are in the id range. However, I believe this is totally underrated because Jennifer is doing what most women who are unhappy with their body

Top 10 Most Anticipated Novels of 2015

Reading Time: 2 minutes January 6: Top Ten Most Anticipated Novels For 2015 As you can see these books are all a continuation of a series and not début. I love series, I love watching the characters grow and develop over time which is why I am so excited for these novels to make their big début in 2015. Here goes: 1. When I’m Gone (Rosemary Beach, #11) by Abbi Glines (April 7th 2015) Not gonna lie, I was never all that interested in Mase or his story but Abbi Glines has yet to steer me wrong, so I think I’ll follow her blindly with this one. 2. Rebound (Boomerang, #2) by Noelle August (February 10th 2015) Ah, the oh so successful and suave Adam Blackwood. Honestly, I didn’t really like him in Boommerang, I hope that all changes. 3. The Friend Zone (Game On, #2) by Kristen Callihan (April 30th 2015) Comic relief Gray Grayson gets his own story with his football owners daughter. 4. When You’re Back (Rosemary Beach, #12) by Abbi Glines (June 30th 2015)  Again, blindly following Abbi Glines. I’m okay with that with this continuation of Reese and Mase’s story. 5. Make it Last (Bowler University, #3) by Megan Erickson (Janurary 6th 2015) Military Cam Ruiz’s story. We didn’t really

10 Authors I Own The Most Books From

Reading Time: 2 minutes July 29: Ten Authors I Own The Most Books From 1. Nora Roberts Other than a select few series, I’ve read of her books and enjoyed a vast majority of them.  I will always pick up one of her books since they are rarely disappointing reads. 2. J.D. Robb  Still Nora Roberts but she writes a whole other genre and I’ve read all 30+ books in the In Death series, so good! 3. J.R. Ward My friend told me about the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and while I was originally on the fence about vampire fantasy this is so well written and so far removed from the vampire norm that I just couldn’t stop reading once I started. 4. Julia Quinn When it comes to historical romantic fiction only a few authors get my undivided attention and loyalty and Julia Quinn is one of them. 5. Mary Balogh  Another historical romance novelist that I always look forward to reading. 6. Judith McNaught Unfortunately there aren’t enough Judith McNaught books out but if she ever decided to write again I will be first in line because they are all of good quality. 7. Susan Elizabeth Phillips The first romantic comedy author I ever read, definitely not the only

Top 10 Favorite TV Shows

Reading Time: 2 minutes  July 15: Let’s talk about other types of stories! Top Ten Favorite Movies or TV Shows! (can break it down to top ten favorite romance movies or comedy shows etc. etc.) Funny story, I was just writing down a list of all the shows I watch and was surprised to see that  I watch A LOT tv shows. Mainly series/seasons of stuff, but I binge watch a lot too, and it is during this binge watching stage where I get the least amount of reading done. 🙁  1. Criminal Minds Matthew Gray Gubler aka Dr. Spencer Reid, so freaking cute! Oh and the story lines are great too…Binged watched all 9 season in less than a month, now that’s dedication people! 2. Penny Dreadful It’s got everything! From vampires to witches and werewolves (what?!) But the best part, Dorian Gray and why is it the best part because I get the reference! Don’t you love when you get the reference, you’re like “hey! I get it cus I read that book! I’m so cool.” <– that’s me, all the time… 3. Once Upon A Time I started a movement when I started watching this in school. We made it a Sunday dorm event, everyone would congregate in

Top 10 Book and Blogging Confessions

Reading Time: 3 minutes July 8: Top Ten Book/Blogging Confessions  1. Biggest Library Snob I don’t know if its snobbish but when I got to library and I check out their adult and NA section and I look up authors and if they don’t have most of an authors famous works or some obscure novel that I feel they should have on their shelves because I can GUARANTEE people will want to read it, I feel as if it’s my sole duty to suggest books for them to get. I’ve done this at three libraries and one of them was a small town library and so grateful when I beefed up their shelves. 2. I dog ear library books and if I’ve checked out a dog-eared book I smooth them all out and ear them at the parts that I like, sometimes its the same as the one before me and that makes me smile. 3. I never know what to say my favorite book is Harry Potter is so cliché right? right?! Top Ten Books On My Summer 2014 TBR List

Reading Time: 2 minutes June 17: Ten Books On My Summer TBR List  Moving is hard on its own but moving countries is slightly worse, States to Canada. I’m finding my groove during this transition so bear with me. I conveniently had a Summer TBR list already, thank you Goodreads! So, without further ado, Summer TBR. I said this before in a previous, this book seems to pop-up whenever I’m on the hunt for new books to read. Since it’s all in my face, I figure I’d give it a try this summer. I don’t remember Lane Parker, but I do remember the other two books in the series. I enjoyed them both and I love continuing/finishing a series. Who doesn’t? 2020 Update: I have not read this book. I’ll need to add it the My Book Jar Challenge The name of this book is what caught my eye. A love story with the cat as a matchmaker? Sounds like a fun summer read to me.  So glad I’m doing this! Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson This book took me back to 1998 literally. I wanted to put it down for that purpose alone. I’m glad I didn’t. 4. Top 10 Book Covers I’d Frame As Pieces of Art

Reading Time: < 1 minute March 6: Top Ten Book Covers I’d Frame As Pieces of Art  Fall/Autumn is by far my favorite season. I love when the leaves are yellow and orange and red. This cover is ideal, plus there’s something about her walking away or maybe towards something that I find intriguing. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson has always had a pull on me, it’s the lone eye. I really just want Veronica Roth’s Insurgent tree. Holly Black Tithe the butterfly, the center yellow is the main focus and I love it. Not only is Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely a great series but all of the covers are ethereal. That Boy by Jillian Dodd makes for great poster hanging material. Love You Forever by Robert Munsch is going in my bathroom. E.B. White’s Trumpet of the Swan was my first ever chapter book, so of course I’ll be framing that. These would go in the dining/living room(s) I don’t I like the furniture themed style of these pics I’d have these three framed together. I like that there are figures partially hidden behind branches. Plus these books were really good.

Top 10 Characters Who Piss Me Off

April 22: Top Ten Characters Who Piss Me Off I guess cause I like to think of characters as real people who I would want to be-friend. These guys did not make the Friendship Cut.   1. Off the Record – Liz Dougherty  I’ve never read about someone who complains so much about a mutual agreed uponcircumstance and who is too cautious or timid to change said circumstance. You have no valid reason to be such a whiner Liz. 2. Wake For Me – Sam Yes, this was an ARC but regardless Sam is spineless, lacking in man parts despite his killer body and fails to believe in his partner. Shame on him.  3. Checkmate (Neighbor Form Hell) Rory AND Connor I was so mad at these two and their childishness (which was no longer entertaining after a while) I wanted to reach through the pages and BANG their heads together. I settled for DNF instead. I am not proud of it but I could not continue. 4. Take This Regret – Elizabeth Ayers  Here is a heroine who is irrational and emotional to point of utter and

Top 10 Most Unique Books I’ve Read

Reading Time: 2 minutes   Enjoy and please feel free to join me, I’d love to hear your own lists on whatever topics are featured.    April 8: Top Ten Most Unique Books I’ve Read (maybe the MC was really different, maybe it was the way it was written, a very unique spin on a genre or topic, etc.)  1. Neighbor’s from Hell Series by R.L. Mathewson  This book just brought out the worst in me, yet I could still laugh at the antics. Plus the weird obsession the MCs have with food is not something I’ve ever read before. 2. On Dublin Street Series by Samantha Young These books take place in Scotland. Maybe it because it takes place in Scotland is why everything about the story-line and the characters seem so unique to me. 3. Addicted to You by Krista & Becca Ritchie This series, this book in particular hooked me because it showed me a more realistic side to sex addiction than my imaginings led me to believe.  4. Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover A deaf musician, mostly I’ve read books with people dying of cancer or something equally fatal, or something too happy. I’ve never read anything that focused on what others in this world live with; impairments are real

Top 10 All Time Favorite Books in Fantasy Genre

Reading Time: 2 minutes Top Ten All-Time Favorite Books in Fantasy (Series) Genre  Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials I remember when I read them at the time, I thought it was the most genius thing written. My mind was blown Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Series. Although I have yet to read the last installment, these were great when I was in my obsessive phase. I just need to find my way back there so I can finish the series. :/ Tamora Pierce Song of the Lioness or the Alanna series as I like to call them. These were awesome. My first venture into a different kind of fantasy. Good times. Melissa Marr The Wicked Lovely Series s I loved these books so much I joined a forum, my first forum ever and where I met a lot of my Goodreads and blogger friends.  #darkling #darkcourt Maggie Stiefvater The Wolves of Mercy Falls This wolf to human and human to wolf story was so different from anything I’ve ever read. It made the fantasy seem not so far-fetched. It was attainable in its logic and for that it will always be a favorite. Libba Bray  The Great and Terrible Beauty Man, I loved this series when I first read them in HS. I proceeded to shove it off
