REVIEW: Manic

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Manic Book Cover

TRAGIC is over and Rook is ready for the future—Spencer Shrike and the STURGIS contract!

It’s three months of body art modeling! That means three months of Spencer Shrike’s paintbrush all over her body, three months in front of Antoine’s camera, and three months of twenty-four hour filming for Spencer’s Biker Channel reality show.

Wait a minute…what reality show? Maybe she should’ve read that STURGIS contract a little closer? 😉

Sure, Rook’s bank account is almost overflowing, but Ronin is angry, Clare is trying to escape rehab, Antoine is a worried mess, and Elise is just trying to hold everyone together. Her new family is about to fall apart before she even gets the chance to enjoy them.

Add in a mysterious man from her past, a road trip to the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and a final show in front of the entire world where all her goods are on display, and you’ve got Manic—a new adult contemporary romance that will definitely make your summer sizzle!

Review:

For someone who came out of a 4 year-long abusive relationship only 3 months ago Rook is doing an admirable job being defiant, rebellious and downright obstinate around a lot of what “normal” people would assume to be intimidating and influential male characters. Her actions are rash and does not portray that of someone who has had a miscarriage and was beaten within an inch of her life before fleeing from her controlling and abusive boyfriend. I really want to reach into the book, smack her and tell her to shut her trap most of the time.

Also, who in their right mind does erotic modeling or modeling of ANY kind if they are running and hoping not to be found by someone with police connections. She’s going to be on a t.v. show, a billboard, magazines and God knows where else as the nude model for Strugis motorcycles. Does she really think her ex won’t find her? I thought she was supposed lie low, I thought that was the whole point of running away….?

I’ve read books where MC have run away from abusive situations and it takes them years to trust again, to feel normal, to continue life without constantly looking over their shoulder or flinching at the a raised hand, Rook is flaunting her new-found freedom, basically taunting the asshole to come and get her. It doesn’t make sense and its unrealistic and therefore frustrating as all get out.

The further I get into this book the more frustrating it all seems. No one gets over such a long-standing traumatic experience.

The worst part is that I kind of enjoyed the first book and then had to deal with this one, I can’t even entertain the idea of the third book, it makes me so upset.

Last Line:  “I’m a chaser”
